Growing Up and Mushrooms
Growing up in Nigeria, mushrooms were abundant and easily accessible. However, meat was scarce. But living here in the United States, the opposite is the case. My mother always says mushrooms are meat; I can credit her for my love of mushrooms. We add them to soups such as egusi, okra, and other local African soups.
There were several occasions when my mother would mix meat and mushrooms in a pot of soup. She would use a small amount of meat and a large amount of mushrooms. Aside from adding mushrooms to soups, my mother also adds them to plantain and yam porridge. YUM!

How to Air Fry Sliced Mushrooms (Step-by-Step)
Here’s how to make delicious air fryer mushrooms you and your family will enjoy!
- Clean and prep
It all starts with cleaning the mushrooms. You want to wash and dry them really well. Honestly, I usually buy them sliced, pre-washed and ready to cook which saves time. If you buy them pre-washed too, you can skip this step and carry on with the recipe. And sometimes if bought whole mushrooms I slice them before air frying.
- Cut
Cut your mushrooms into halves. Unless you’ve bought them pre-cut too, then skip to the next step.
- Preheat the air fryer
With air fryer mushrooms, you can’t skip the preheating step. This ensures your mushrooms cook up to that perfect texture. Set the air fryer temperature to 400F and the time to 12 minutes. Press the preheat button to start preheating it. You will hear a beeping sound after it’s preheated, and that’s when you add the mushrooms!
- Season the mushrooms
While the air fryer preheats, you’ll put your sliced mushrooms into a big bowl and first sprinkle the olive oil and toss to combine. Then, add the other seasonings – onion powder, garlic powder, dry thyme, black pepper, salt, paprika, and Maggi. Toss or use a spatula to combine. Ensure to season every mushroom!
- Air fry the Mushrooms
Add the seasoned mushrooms to your air fryer basket and cook for 12 minutes. Make sure they are not too crowded. If possible, lay them in a single layer.
- Toss/Flip Midway and Finish Cooking
Halfway through the cooking time, toss the mushrooms and spray avocado cooking spray. Once they’re done, garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Serve warm with your favorite main dishes.

Sliced Air Fryer Mushrooms Notes/Tips
- Don’t overcrowd the fryer basket. If necessary, cook this in batches.
- Make to turn/flip midway through cooking. If not, the mushrooms won’t cook evenly.
- Do not let the seasonings sit on the mushrooms for longer; the mushrooms may begin to wilt out because of the salt. This is why you season the mushrooms while the air fryer is preheating!
- If you don’t buy pre-washed mushrooms, make sure that you get them completely dry before you season them. Use paper towels to pat dry.
- Your cooking time may change depending on how big/small the thickness of the slices of the mushrooms.
- Use the herbs/spices you like!
- Please note that I prefer to slice the mushrooms or use sliced mushrooms because the seasoning really penetrates and makes for a better tasting mushroom recipe. On the other hand, if you do not wish to slice your mushrooms, you can absolutely cook them whole.
How to Store Leftovers
If you have any of these delicious mushrooms leftover, put them in an airtight container in your fridge, and be sure to finish them off in 3 to 4 days. You can also freeze them for up to 9 months, but I’d aim to use them up sooner than that.
Air Fryer Mushrooms FAQs
You should air fry each batch of your mushrooms for 10 – 15 minutes depending on sizes. This cooks them to the perfect texture every time. If you have lots of them, make sure you cook them in batches. If you fill the air fryer basket up too full, they won’t cook evenly.
The good news is that you can air fry mushrooms in any air fryer you have. My air fryer has a basket, and I love it! Again, don’t overcrowd that basket, or you’ll have inconsistent textures in the batch. I have used this Instant Vortex air fryer for the last three years and have only good things to say about it!
After cooking, mushrooms can keep for 3 to 4 days when properly stored in your fridge. You could also freeze them if you’d like, making it easy to meal prep.
Yes! If you made a ton of these air fryer mushrooms as a side dish for a big holiday meal, you can put them in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 9 months.
Mushrooms go great with all kinds of things like chicken dishes, steaks, shrimp dishes, potatoes, and plenty more. They can also be a meaty stand-in when you want a meatless meal that feels satisfying and filling.

Can I Make these Sliced Air Fryer Mushrooms in the Oven?
Yes, you can make this mushroom recipe in your conventional oven if you don’t have an air fryer yet. We love to use the air fryer a lot here, but no bigger if you’ve no air fryer. Simply season the mushrooms and lay on a single layer on a baking sheet. Cooking time may change, as you may need to add additional time!
