Oven-Baked Pasta Chips Recipe:
TikTok’s new viral food trend is pasta chips, aka chips made with pasta. Pasta chips are crispy, crunchy, tasty, and irresistibly satisfying! Kind of hard to explain until you try! Oven-baked pasta chips are made with cooked (boiled) pasta, seasoned with parmesan cheese, EVOO, black pepper, chopped fresh parsley, onion & garlic powder, and then baked to perfection inside the oven! You can equally air fry these chips if you do have the Air Fryer. That was actually how this trend began – Air Fryer pasta chips! However, do not sweat over it if you do not have an Air Fryer. I got you!😊
Finally, I served my chips with a cheesy dip, and you need strong willpower to prevent yourself from not finishing them! Uniquely, these chips are delicious and are perfect appetizers or snacks for any occasion. Trust me when I say that these oven baked pasta chips are worth your time!
About TikTok Viral Food Trends
From time to time, TikTok comes up with the weirdest and yet worthy food trends that are worth the hype! Just like Nature’s cereal and Baked Oats trends, people are really loving these pasta chips, and making different variations of them! First, they are easy to make; boil, season, and bake them! Second, you need only very minimal ingredients; for instance, I used a total of six ingredients. If you exclude onion and garlic powder, that would be four! Finally, this is such a cheap fun recipe! In other words, you do not have to break a bank to make pasta chips!
What is the Best Pasta for making Pasta Chips?
When I first heard about pasta chips, I know I have to make them! And because I wanted to share this recipe here, I decided to try it with different kinds of pasta. This way, you will have more information before you make yours. First, I made rigatoni chips. Next, I made lasagna chips. Aside from switching up the kinds of pasta, all the other ingredients pretty much remained the same. Also, I baked both pasta chips in the oven.
I am happily reporting that lasagna chips won this battle (well, according to my family). First, lasagna chips took less time. Second, they seem lighter and airy! Finally, they looked like real chips. #Winner
Rotini, Penne, Bowtie, Fusilli, etc.
My final verdict is to use a type of pasta you can pick up easily. For example, I wouldn’t make pasta chips with spaghetti, fettuccine, or linguine pasta. Though it is possible to make pasta chips with spaghetti because I have seen it, I simply wouldn’t!
Typically, I would prefer the “finger food” kind of pasta. Those kinds of pasta that you can effortlessly pick up and dip! Having said that, I used Lasagna and Rigatoni. However, the list of types of pasta you can use is endless – rotini, penne, fusilli, farfalle, or bowtie pasta, etc. All make excellent choices for pasta chips recipe!
Equipment or Tools You will need:
- Oven or Air Fryer (well, obviously). Many people think you can only make this recipe in the Air Fryer because the trend started with Air Fried pasta chips. However, that’s not true. Don’t worry if you do not have an Air Fryer. If you have an oven, you can absolutely make crispy and delicious oven-baked pasta chips!
- A sieve/colander for draining the pasta water immediately after cooking.
- Baking rack/wire rack. I used this only with the lasagna chips because I didn’t want them to stick to the cookie sheet. If you intend to make lasagna chips, I highly recommend using a baking rack!
- Cookie Sheet: you will need to place the baking rack on the cookie sheet. Personally, I like this baking rack + cookie sheet combo!
Ingredients for Viral TikTok Pasta Chips Recipe
Whether you plan to make these chips in the oven or an Air Fryer, the ingredients generally remain the same! Here are what you will need for this recipe:
- ½ pack of rigatoni pasta box (about 8 ounces) Or 5 lasagna sheets.
- ¼ cup of parmesan
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil or less
- 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley (optional; I used these only when I made the Lasagna chips)
- Salt to taste
HOW TO MAKE PASTA CHIPS WITH LASAGNA IN THE OVEN:
- Preheat oven to 425
- Cook pasta according to the package instructions (maybe one or two minutes less) and drain the water. Cook al dente; I cooked my lasagna sheets for 7 minutes. Make sure to heavily salt the pasta water.
- Gently remove lasagna sheets and lay them on the cutting board. Cut the lasagna to your desired shapes. I typically cut one lasagna sheet into 6.
- While the pasta is still on the cutting board, add the seasonings – olive oil, parmesan cheese, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and chopped parsley. Use your hand to combine while wearing a glove. Ensure that all the pasta is covered in the seasoning.
- Place the baking rack on the baking sheet.
- Lay or arrange the seasoned lasagna chips on a single layer on the baking rack. Do not overlap.Place in a preheated oven and bake for 18 – 20 minutes or until crisp and golden. Check the chips after the first 10 minutes, and flip for even baking.
- Finish baking for another 8 – 10 minutes or at your desired doneness! Enjoy with your loved ones.
HOW TO MAKE OVEN-BAKED RIGATONI CHIPS:
- Preheat oven to 425
- Cook pasta according to the package instructions (maybe one minute less) and drain the water. Cook al dente; make sure to heavily salt the pasta water.
- Add the cooked pasta into a big bowl, and add the seasonings – olive oil, parmesan cheese, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Use a tong or spatula to combine very well, ensuring that all the pasta is covered in the seasoning.Spread out the well-seasoned pasta on a single layer on a clean, greased baking sheet.
- Place in a preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes; give a good stir for even baking. Bake for another 15 minutes or until golden and crisp! Check every 5 – 10 minutes to prevent overcooking.
My oven-baked rigatoni pasta chips turned out great, and it was even tastier with the sauce. Even though my brood preferred the lasagna chips, I enjoyed both of them!
The Best Dip for Pasta Chip Recipes:
Obviously, you can dunk your chip in any dip of choice or eat them as is. However, I think that the best dips for pasta chip recipes are pasta sauces (in my opinion). The likes of marinara sauce would be an excellent dip for pasta chips and any cheesy sauces.
Okay, true story: the first time I tried this recipe, I wanted an “over-the-bar-dip.” I spent time, money, and energy whipping up ricotta. In the end, it felt like meh! 🤣
Then I made a simple “mac and cheese sauce” of butter, cream, and cheese, and it totally elevated the tastiness of these pasta chips! It felt at home and perfectly complemented this recipe. The takeaway here is to keep it simple. The dipping sauce ingredients includes:
- 1 tablespoon of butter
- ¼ cup of heavy cream
- ¼ cup milk (any type; I used whole milk)
- About 3 oz of cheddar cheese; or add until the sauce thickens to your ideal consistency).
To make the cheesy dipping sauce:
- Set a clean pan on the stove. Add the butter and allow it to melt, then add the heavy cream and milk. When it starts bubbling, lower the heat and add the cheese while gently stirring.
- Thicken with more cheese or thin out with milk. Pour into a small container and garnish with more cheddar cheese and chopped parsley. Serve pasta chips while the sauce is still warm and cheesy. Enjoy!
SUBSTITUTIONS
- You can use any pasta of choice (I used lasagna and rigatoni). I wouldn’t use spaghetti or linguine pasta, though.
- This pasta chip recipe calls for parm (aka parmesan), but you can substitute it with any other hard cheese. Asiago cheese, Romano cheese, or Grana Padano are all great options.
- Experiment with flavors; I kept this recipe simple because I wanted the kids and husband to get on board. (Thankfully, they did). However, you can go places with flavors when it comes to this recipe. You can make it spicy; add some chili peppers. Perhaps smoked paprika would be a great flavor to try as well.
- I opted for a cheesy dip for these chips, but marinara or any other tomato sauce would be great too! Guacamole makes everything better; I hope to try it when I make the next batch!
TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST VIRAL TIKTOK PASTA CHIPS:
- Use a “finger food” kind of pasta. In other words, for best results, use those kinds of pasta that you can effortlessly pick up and dip! I used Lasagna or Rigatoni. But the list is endless – rotini, penne, fusilli, farfalle or bowtie pasta, etc. All make excellent choices for pasta chips recipe!
- Do not overcook the pasta; I cooked mine one minute less. If the noodles are too soft, they could break apart while seasoning.
- Make sure to flip the chips halfway for even baking. This will prevent the “burnt side.”
- It is essential to lay the chips on a single layer when baking. Do not allow them to overlay each other.
- Use a baking rack, especially for the lasagna chips. The last thing you want is for them to stick to your cookie sheet. That would be a nightmare!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Pasta chips are not unhealthy. Regardless, you should eat them in moderation because they are still chips. Pay attention to how much you are eating. It is easier to exceed the serving size when enjoying pasta as chips. Generally, what determines the healthiness of any food is the ingredients. If you are concerned about using regular pasta, use whole wheat pasta, gluten-free pasta, chickpea pasta, or cassava paste. Do what works best for your health.
No, you do not need an Air Fryer to make these pasta chips. I made these in the oven, and they came out crisp, crunchy, and delicious! Preheat your oven to 425 and lay the pasta on a single layer. Be patient and bake until crisp and golden.
In my experience, lasagna chips are easier, quicker, and crispier. If you are a newbie, I highly suggest lasagna. Make sure to use a baking rack too, and follow my instructions. These oven-baked TikTok viral pasta chips will literally blow your mind! NO NEED FOR AN AIR FRYER!
No, these chips are not necessarily hard, but they are crunchy. However, my kids and husband believe that the lasagna chips are crispier, lighter, and less hard than the rigatoni.
Cheesy sauces would greatly complement these chips! On the other hand, I think any dip would do. However, this would depend on your choice.
For best results, store leftover pasta chips in an air-tight container. In reality, there might not be any leftovers; these chips are irresistibly delicious.
These chips make great appetizers or snacks and are great for dipping. Perfect for when you are hosting a dinner party or just having friends over.
Homemade Chips Made Easy:
