Healthy Freezer Breakfast Burritos are my Kids’ Current Obsession!
I say breakfast; my kids say burritos! When I say cereal, my kids say breakfast burritos!! I say peanut butter and jelly; my kids say healthy freezer breakfast burritos!!! My kids weaned themselves off cereal as soon as a result of my freezer breakfasts. I usually make different types, but this burrito is one of their favorites. They can eat it every morning without complaints, unlike when you ask them to eat cereal or PBJ. Listen, am grateful for that!
With the new school year in full throttle in our county (against my wish, LOL)! I had to meal prep some of our favorite freezer meals. First on the list for my breakfast meal prep is, of course, these healthy freezer breakfast burritos. Alongside freezer-friendly breakfast sandwiches, vegan oatmeal muffins, and healthy sweet potato cups. This mom ain’t playing!
Tools for Making a Breakfast Burrito:
What is the Best Tortilla Wrap for a Healthy Burrito?
Typically, I use “carb balance,” low-carb, low-calorie tortilla wraps from Mission. It contains half the carbohydrate as well as half the calorie of a regular 8-inch flour tortilla. Fortunately, it still feels and tastes the same!
Listen, carb balance is the real MVP here. I load it up as I would normally do to any other tortilla, then pull to wrap, and it wouldn’t tear! It wraps excellently nicely, freezes well, and reheats great! You can also check out gluten-free tortilla wraps if that’s what you want!
COMPONENTS OF MY HEALTHY FREEZER BREAKFAST BURRITOS:
My healthy freezable breakfast burritos contain five different things – leafy greens, scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, cheese, and tortilla wraps.
- Leafy greens are a must in my healthy freezer breakfast burritos! First of all, leafy greens are packed with beneficial nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Second, you will not taste them. Finally, what a beautiful way to start your day with some veggies? The best part is that you can add any leafy green you have on hand. I generally add mixed greens (a mixture of baby spinach and spring mix)! On the other hand, I have never used kale or collard green in this recipe.
- Scrambled eggs. There’s a saying that breakfasts are never complete without eggs. Similarly, soft and fluffy scrambled eggs tend to be a great addition to these healthy freezer-friendly breakfast burritos! Though I scrambled my eggs with a tablespoon of butter and heavy cream, you can totally do without them! I have also used EVOO, and it worked. Just ensure to cook the eggs on low, and be patient.
- Turkey sausage. I intentionally opted for turkey sausage in this recipe instead of regular pork sausage because is healthier. It has less calorie and less sodium! However, any sausage would work, and use what you have on hand. I added just a dash of spices, and this was ah-mazing! Turkey sausage was a great addition to this healthy freezer breakfast burritos. Nevertheless, don’t sweat over it if you can’t find it. Easily swap turkey sausage with bacon or mushroom, and it would still taste great!
- Say Cheese! I love adding cheese to our breakfast burritos! And my go-to cheeses for this recipe are mozzarella or cheddar. Cheese is salty, savory, cheesy, and gently binds everything together! With this in mind, we enjoy cheese in these freezer breakfast burritos. There are also great non-dairy cheeses you can try if you so desire!
- Low-carb soft Tortilla wrap (I used “carb balance” from Mission; see my review above!)
HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY FREEZER BREAKFAST BURRITOS:
- PREP THE SAUSAGE. Place a clean pan on the stove and set to medium, add the olive oil, and allow to heat up. And add the turkey sausage, use a wooden to break down. Season with thyme, onion and garlic powder, bouillon, pepper, and salt. Adjust the seasoning as needed and cook until done and no longer pink. Then set it aside.
- SCRAMBLE THE EGGS. Crack all the eggs into a big bowl that would fit, add the ingredients for seasoning the eggs and the heavy cream. Use a whisk and mix well together until completed blended.
- Place a clean non-stick pan on the stove, set to low. Add the butter, and allow to warm up just a little. Then pour the egg mixture, and be patient. Gently move the eggs around using a silicone spatula. The eggs would eventually begin to set, cook (to your desire), and set aside. Do not overcook the scrambled eggs; the outcome should be soft, moist, and tender.
- ASSEMBLE HEALTHY FREEZER BREAKFAST BURRITOS: Place a tortilla wrap on a clean surface or chopping board, layer with some greens. Make sure to spread thin, and keep them in the middle.
- Pile up some of the turkey sausages onto the leafy greens (a little less/more as you prefer)
- Add some of the scrambled eggs on top of the sausage, and finally top with cheese.
- WRAP BREAKFAST BURRITOS: To wrap the burritos, first, fold in the sides. Then, use the flap to roll over, continue until the entire wrap is secured. Finally, use a sandwich wrapping paper to wrap and keep in the freezer. Make sure to watch the video to see the whole picture. It gets easier when you see it in real-time.
- Repeat the process to assemble and wrap all the burritos. Store these healthy freezer breakfast burritos in the freezer for the best result! This recipe makes 6 – 8 breakfast burritos.
Best Freezer-Friendly Wrapper for a Burrito:
My go-to freezer-friendly wrapper is eco-friendly sandwich paper wrappers. I like using them because I don’t have to remove them before reheating the burritos in the microwave, unlike foil. Nevertheless, the best wrapper is the one you have. If you have foil or plastic wrapper, use it. I rarely use plastic wraps because I never have them.
How to Reheat a Frozen Breakfast Burrito
There are many ways to reheat a frozen burrito: microwave, oven, Air fryer, or grill.
- The microwave is the easiest way to reheat these healthy freezer breakfast burritos, especially when on-the-go! However, the length of time it takes to reheat a burrito depends on the size of the burrito as well as how piping hot you want them! Usually, it takes me about 2 – 3 minutes to reheat one of these healthy freezer breakfast burritos. (An 8-inch burrito takes no time to warm up). Please make sure you unwrap the burritos if they were wrapped in foil or plastic before reheating.
- Secondly, you can reheat a burrito in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350, and place the frozen burritos on a baking sheet. Then reheat for 15 – 20 minutes or until thoroughly hot and cooked through.
- Thirdly, to reheat a burrito in the Air Fryer, turn the Air Fryer to “reheat.” Place the frozen burritos and allow them to completely reheat. Make sure to turn mid-way for an even cooking. Keep eyes on these healthy freezer burritos while reheating in the Air Fryer because the time may vary due to size. And you do not want a dry burrito!
- Finally, you can reheat breakfast burritos on the grill (especially if on a camping trip, cookout, or outside your home). Follow the same instructions on how to reheat my freezer breakfast sandwiches on the grill. Simply wrap burritos in heavy duty aluminum foil, allow to thaw, and place on grill to reheat.
FREEZER BREAKFAST BURRITOS FAQs
Yes, most freezer breakfast burritos are nutritious and healthy. Best to make them yourself and use healthy ingredients!
Breakfast burritos are healthy because of their ingredients. For instance, my healthy freezer breakfast burritos contain scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, cheese, and low-carb tortilla wrap. All of these (in my opinion) are wholesome ingredients that are great for the body! Note that I used turkey sausage rather than regular pork sausage because the former is healthier.
Yes, you can eat burritos in the morning. I highly suggest eating healthy breakfast burritos such as this one in the morning. Likewise, feel free to make them ahead for a quick grab-n-go experience. Who wants to wake up and start making burritos, anyways? Not me!
Avoid a soggy breakfast burrito by allowing all components of your burrito to completely cool down before wrapping. In the same fashion, wrap them up in a clean, dry sandwich wrapping paper, plastic wrapper, or heavy-duty aluminum foil.
My preference for storing homemade burritos is the freezer! I typically prepare almost a month’s worth of these healthy freezer breakfast burritos, and I keep them in the freezer. In my opinion, homemade burritos are better off stored inside the freezer than in the fridge! Whether I am storing them for 2 days or 2 months, I just go with the freezer.

Notes
Do not overcook the eggs.
You can swap turkey sausage with regular pork sausage. Turkey sausage indeed makes these burritos healthier. However, pork sausage is higher in calories and sodium.
I used mozzarella, but you use any Cheese of choice. Though I personally prefer melty cheeses in this recipe!
When reheating, do not overcook, and dry up the moistness and juiciness of these breakfast burritos!
Best to make in batch because you spend almost the amount of time!
