Ingredients for Making Pizza Dough!
How to Make a Pizza Dough at Home from Scratch (Step-by-Step)
Here’s how to make pizza dough from scratch at home with only few ingredients.
- Proof your yeast
It all starts with adding the yeast, honey, lukewarm water, and olive oil into a bowl. Give it a stir to combine it and let it sit to proof.
- Mix dry Ingredients
While the other ingredients proof, combine your flour and salt in another bowl.
- Combine wet and dry Ingredients
Next, you’ll add the wet yeast mixture to your bowl of flour and salt. Use a wooden spoon or even mix by hand, making sure everything forms together into a ball. It shouldn’t be sticky and should pull away from the bowl. You can add a little flour to fight the stickiness until you get the right texture.
- Knead
Once combined, you should knead the dough about 10 – 12 times. I additionally like to split it in two to have a portion of pizza dough to use another time. You don’t have to split it up, but doing so makes it easier to either make 2 pizzas or save the dough for another pizza night.
- Let it rise
Grease a bowl with olive oil and then put your pizza dough in it, covering tightly with plastic wrap. Leave it to sit for an hour or so until it doubles in size.
- Roll it out
When you’re ready to make your pizza, deflate the dough with your hands and put it on a floured board. Use a rolling pin to roll it out, and then you can start making your pizza. I typically flatten out my dough, as shown below for a thin crust pizza recipe. You may need to use the two dough balls if you wish to make thick crust/deep dish pizza!
How to Store Pizza Dough
In the fridge, pizza dough should be covered and used up within 1 to 3 days. You can also store it in the freezer, but make sure you wrap it well and put it to use within 3 months.
Notes/Tips:
- This recipe will make 2 medium-sized thin crust pizzas, which is precisely why I like dividing the dough. You may need to use the two dough balls if you wish to make thick crust/deep dish pizza! And you do not need to flatten it out!
- When combining the ingredients to make your dough ball, add flour a little at a time if it’s still sticky. Be careful not to add too much flour though or it can affect the dough texture.
- Be patient and let the dough rise. I recommend making it ahead of time so that when you’re ready to make your pizza, you can just get right to it.
- Make sure to allow the dough to double in size before using!
How Do You Stretch Out Pizza Dough?
Remember to let your pizza dough sit out at room temperature before stretching it out first. You can then use your fingertips to gently push and stretch the dough outward from the center. Working in a circular shape helps it stay in proper pizza formation.
FAQs
The water you use should be lukewarm to help the yeast do what it does best. That’s the trick to making good pizza dough.
You should allow at least an hour prior to making your pizza to make the dough. If you prepare the dough in advance, make sure you let the dough sit out at room temperature for a little bit first for the best results.
