How to Make Healthy Nigerian Sweet Potato Porridge
Sweet potato porridge is one of those cozy, nourishing meals that feels both comforting and satisfying. Made with wholesome ingredients and simple flavors, this healthy sweet potato porridge recipe is easy to prepare and perfect for busy weeknights or weekend family meals. If you are looking for a hearty one-pot recipe packed with flavor and nutrition, this one is definitely worth trying.
Nigerian Sweet Potato Porridge (Pottage).
This delicious Nigerian-style sweet potato porridge recipe reminds me so much of my childhood. I grew up eating sweet potatoes regularly, and I still remember how my parents encouraged us to plant them in our backyard.
In the Igbo language (my native language), sweet potato is called jinwannú, which literally translates to “sweet yam.” Interestingly though, sweet potatoes are not actually part of the yam family — at least not the edible starchy yam tubers we commonly eat back home in Africa. By appearance alone, you might think they are related, but they are not.
Surprisingly, sweet potatoes are not part of the regular potato family either. They belong to the bindweed family and are technically considered root vegetables.

No matter the science behind them though, one thing is certain: sweet potatoes make some of the most comforting, nourishing, and delicious meals — and this Nigerian sweet potato porridge is definitely one of them.
I have many fond memories of eating sweet potatoes growing up. I rarely remember my mother frying them. Most times, she would either roast them, boil them, add them to Nigerian beans porridge, or make sweet potato porridge like this recipe. Nigerian sweet potato porridge is naturally delicious on its own and does not require a lot of ingredients or spices to taste good. Most importantly, it does not require sugar; this is a savory dish, not a sweet one.

Ingredients for Nigerian Potato Porridge (Pottage).
Sweet Potatoes.
To make this spectacular dish, you will, of course, need sweet potatoes — there is really no substitute for them in this recipe. Sweet potatoes are incredibly nutritious and packed with health benefits. In fact, one cup of sweet potato with the skin contains about 950 mg of potassium, which is even more than what is typically found in a banana, despite bananas being widely known as a potassium powerhouse. Potassium helps the body manage excess sodium and may help support healthy blood pressure levels.
Sweet potatoes are also rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins A and C, manganese, vitamin B6, and several other important minerals and plant compounds. Plus, they are relatively low in calories, with one medium sweet potato containing just about 103 calories. Beyond their nutritional value, sweet potatoes add natural flavor, texture, and heartiness to this comforting dish.

Spinach (or any other green Leafy Vegetables).
Apart from sweet potatoes, you will also need spinach for this dish. Around the world, spinach is widely recognized as a nutritional powerhouse because of its many health-supporting properties. It is known to support brain health, eye health, bone health, and heart health — making it an excellent vegetable to incorporate into your meals regularly.
Spinach is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant compounds that may help protect the body against inflammation and free radicals. It belongs to the same plant family as beets and quinoa, a group of foods often praised for their nourishing and protective health benefits. Most importantly, spinach works beautifully in this sweet potato porridge by adding color, flavor, and extra nutrition to the dish. If you are not a fan of spinach, you can easily substitute it with another leafy green such as kale, watercress, or even arugula. Each option adds its own unique flavor and nutritional benefits to the dish.

Other Ingredients.
Besides sweet potatoes and spinach, you will also need onions, garlic, olive oil, dry fish, bell peppers, tomato paste (or fresh tomatoes), ground crayfish, salt, pepper, and seasoning cubes.
One of the things I love most about this recipe is how flexible it is. If you prefer a plant-based version, you can easily make this meal vegan by simply excluding the fish and crayfish. It will still turn out flavorful, hearty, and delicious.
How to Make the Best Sweet Potato Porridge.
Peel and cut sweet potatoes:
For this Nigerian sweet potato porridge recipe, I personally love cutting the sweet potatoes into cubes or square-shaped pieces. Of course, you can cut them however you prefer. However, I recommend cutting the sweet potatoes into similar sizes to ensure even cooking. Sometimes I make the cubes bigger, other times smaller — just like the photo below.

Sauté aromatics and add Sweet Potatoes:
Sauté the onions, garlic, and tomato paste until fragrant. Then add the ground crayfish, dry fish, seasonings, spices, and water. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes before adding the sweet potatoes.

Can I Make Potato Porridge (Pottage) without spinach?
Yes, you can absolutely make this Nigerian sweet potato porridge without spinach. Adding spinach is optional, though highly recommended because it adds beautiful color, extra flavor, and additional nutrition to the dish. Be sure to check out some of the amazing health benefits of spinach mentioned above.

- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 4 Servings 1x
- Category: Entree
- Method: Stovetop

Description
This sweet potato porridge is simple, spectacular, flavorful and mouthwatering. Fully packed with nutritious ingredients. It is a family favorite for brunch, lunch, or dinner.
Ingredients
- 3 big sweet potatoes (or up to 8–10 small ones or any quantity you desire)
- 2– 3 tablespoon of olive oil (or any vegetable oil)
- 3 cups of fresh spinach (or 1 bag of 12oz frozen spinach; you may not use all of it; spinach is optional)
- 3 oz. tomato paste
- 1 cup of chopped fresh vegetables (onions, garlic and bell peppers)
- 2 tablespoons of ground crayfish
- 10 oz. of dry fish
- 1 teaspoon of salt (always add salt according to your taste or health need)
- 2 Maggi cubes or 2 teaspoons of seasoning bullion powder.
- ½ teaspoon of dry thyme
- ½ teaspoon curry powder
- a dash of crush red pepper or ground African Bird’s eye pepper
- 1 – 2 cups of water (do not add to much water)
Instructions
- Wash, peel, and cut sweet potatoes; set aside. Chop the other vegetables as well. Wash and clean the dry fish if you are using it.
- Set a clean pot/pan on the stove, and turn the stove to medium and allow to warm up. Add oil and heat up, then add about ½ teaspoon salt and the chopped fresh vegetables except for the spinach.
- Sauté for about 2 minutes and add the tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes (or until it no longer tastes raw. Then add crayfish, and fish while reducing the heat (this process helps the fish to become more flavorful). Ensure that the heat is still low to avoid the tomatoes sticking to the pot and stir mildly.
- Add all the other condiments: salt, thyme, curry, ground or crush red pepper, crayfish, one Maggi or Knorr cube, and stir to combine. Then add water and stir; taste for flavor and adjust.
- Gently add the cut sweet potatoes, give a good stir, and turn the heat to medium-high.
- Cover the pot, and cook for the next 15 – 20 minutes or until the potatoes soften. Check on the potatoes every 5 – 7 minutes, and give a small stir if need be.)
- Finally, stir in the spinach when the potatoes are soft and simmer for another 1 – 2 minutes. Garnish with spring onions, and enjoy!
Notes
Make this meal vegetarian by not adding ground crayfish, and dry fish (I personally love adding these proteins.) You can also substitute with tofu.
The length of time you cook this dish will the depend on how big or small you cut the potatoes.
When it comes to making this sweet potato porridge, the bottom line is to own it and make it your way. You can substitute sweet potatoes for regular (white) potatoes; mix both if you so desire. Or you can add some ripe plantain, take a look at the video, and notice that I added some plantains; I made sure to cut them the same size as the potatoes.
