Best Yeast Honey Butter Dinner Rolls You Can Make at Home!
You are absolutely going to love these dinner rolls. They’re my family’s favorite. Yet another reason they love the holidays is because that’s when I make them. My mother-in-law was visiting the last time I made them, and she couldn’t stop eating them. Neither could my kids. It’s that honey butter sauce that makes them legendary, giving you extra soft rolls that are buttery, perfect, and create a melt-in-your-mouth kind of situation.
Tips for Yeast Rolls to Rise Faster
Yes, these are a labor of love but they’re so worth it. For faster rising yeast rolls, you can add hot water to a heat-safe dish. Put this in your cold oven on a lower shelf, and the heat and steam will help the temperature rise enough to activate the yeast and get things moving faster.
Why You Will Love These Sweet Dinner Rolls:
- They are absolutely addictive.
- They will make your holiday dinner or special occasion complete.
- The texture is incredible – soft, fluffy, and melt-in-your-mouth.
- The honey-butter sauce will have you on your knees.
- You don’t need a mixer! One less of equipment you do not have to worry about.
- As long as you have an hour and a half (or more) to allow them to rise, you are all set. Baking these is a breeze, as they bake in less than 15 minutes!
- You can work on the days or weeks in advance and then bake when ready!

How to Make Homemade Honey Butter Dinner Rolls (Step-by-Step)
Here’s how you can make these spectacular honey butter dinner rolls from scratch!
- Gather and Prep
All recipes are easier to follow when you gather and prep what you need. In this case, proof your yeast in the prep step by adding warm water to a bowl and adding the yeast packet. Add 2 teaspoons – 1 tablespoon of monk fruit sweetener, stir it together, and let it proof for about 5 minutes.
- Make the Dough
After proofing your yeast, add it to a big bowl, then add the warm milk, beaten egg, softened butter, and monk fruit. Use a whisk to combine. The mixture doesn’t have to be smooth; you can still see small lumps of butter. Then, add the flour and salt, and use your clean hands to combine until it forms a ball! This dough may be slightly sticky.
- Rise
Oil a separate big bowl and place your dough in it, covering it with cling film/plastic wrap. Set it in a warm, unbothered area to rise. This should take at least 45 minutes to an hour to double in size.
- Make the Honey Butter
While the dough rises, make your honey butter mixture by combining the honey, butter, and icing sugar with a spatula. Once prepared, set aside.
- Knead
Once your dough has risen, deflate it with your knuckles. Flour your pastry board and set the dough there; continue kneading with your hands until it is soft and smooth.
- Roll the Dough
Split the dough into two balls, setting one aside. Place one on your pastry board or mat. Then, roll it out with a rolling pin to look like square pizza dough. You can then cut it with your pastry cutter, cutting down the middle in a straight line and then across to form small rectangles. The result will be about 16 rectangles (or more). Grease a big rectangle baking dish (9×13 or bigger).
- Brush and Rise
Take the honey butter mixture and lightly brush it onto each of those rectangles. Roll each one up and put it on your greased baking dish. Once complete, do this with the other dough ball you set aside. Cover it all with plastic wrap and set in a warm area, allowing the dough to double in size for about 45 minutes to an hour.
- Bake and Enjoy
Preheat your oven to 375F. Remove the plastic covering from your dough and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. It should be a bit golden on top. Brush leftover honey butter sauce on top while the dinner rolls are hot! Serve hot or warm alongside your dinner! These rolls are so addictive!!! The photo below shows the rolls before brushing with the butter sauce.
Recipe Notes/Tips
- The dough may feel sticky initially before the first rise, but that’s okay! Make sure to grease your bowl before placing it in there to rise.
- Use your knuckles to deflate the dough after rising. This releases air from the dough for the best results.
- Ensure to flour your surface before kneading.
- I used Monk fruit sweetener, but you can use sugar!
- Whatever you do, do NOT over-knead your dough. You should only do so until it is soft and smooth.
- Please ensure to let your dough rise the second time before baking.
- Do not overbake or burn these rolls. I suggest setting a timer for 15 minutes. Please note that your baking time may change if your rolls are bigger or your oven works differently.
- Suppose you need help checking if your rolls are ready. Feel free to do a toothpick test to ensure your dough isn’t raw!
Honey Butter Dinner Rolls Make-Ahead Tips!
- You can make these rolls the day ahead by completing 1-7 steps. Just cover them well and refrigerate them overnight. Alternatively, you can freeze them. Whenever you want to use your dinner rolls, bake and enjoy!
- Remember that baking will differ depending on whether they are in the refrigerator or freezer. If you left them in the fridge overnight, then simply preheat and bake them at the temperature stated in step 8 (375F) and time. But if the rolls are frozen, you may need to allow them to thaw in the refrigerator. You can also bake them from frozen at a lower temperature of 345 F for 25 minutes or until they are fully cooked and the top is golden.
- Feel free to do a toothpick test to ensure your dough isn’t raw!

You can serve these honey butter dinner rolls with any dinner meal, including pasta, soups, and other mains! They make an excellent accompaniment for Sunday dinners, holiday dinners, birthday dinners, and other special occasions. They make great snacks, too! How to Store Leftover Honey Butter Dinner Rolls
I’ve got to be honest… It’s so unlikely you’ll have any of these leftovers. But if you do, cover them and tuck them in the fridge for up to 7 days. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months.
Variations and Substitutions
- If you don’t have whole milk, you can use another type. However, whole milk will give it the most fat and flavor.
- Bread flour can be substituted for all-purpose flour, though it may result in chewier rolls.
- No dry active yeast, no problem! Use double the measurement of fresh yeast.
- You do not want to brush honey butter sauce on the rolls after baking? Don’t! Eat them as is.
FAQs – Dinner Rolls
The main reason may be due to your measurements or the type of flour you’ve used. Be careful when measuring to ensure you don’t add too much flour. Also, if you do not have all-purpose flour and use bread flour, for example, this can lead to dense rolls.
Technically, you could, though that doesn’t mean that you should. The temperature of 375 is perfect for these dinner rolls to rise to the occasion. If you wish to bake them at a lower temperature, you must increase the baking time.
This dough should be a little sticky, but if it’s too sticky, you can add just a touch of flour. However, do not add too much or you will wind up with dense rolls.
Wet dough may collapse when baking. Do your best to stick to these directions to have these rolls come out perfectly.
Hawaiian rolls use a little honey, vanilla, and pineapple juice to distinguish themselves from sweet dinner rolls.

I used two different baking dishes to accommodate this recipe: a 9×13 baking dish and another smaller one. If need be use two baking dishes because the dough is expected to rise before baking. Your dough needs some space.
