Description
These Air Fryer Nigerian Suya Chicken Wings are juicy, crispy, spicy, and generously seasoned with authentic yaji. Serve them 9ja-style with fresh onions and tomatoes, as an appetizer, or alongside jollof rice for an easy, flavor-packed meal.
Ingredients
- 4 pounds chicken wings (a jumbo pack)
- ½ cup yaji/suya pepper, divided
- 3 tablespoons to ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil, divided
- 2 teaspoons Knorr bouillon seasoning or 2 small cubes
- 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken Wings. Gather your ingredients and prepare the chicken wings. Clean the wings according to your usual kitchen practice. Then, pat them very dry with paper towels before seasoning. Removing excess moisture helps the chicken wings crisp beautifully in the air fryer.
- Season the Wings. Place the dried chicken wings in a large bowl. Add about half of the olive oil, Knorr seasoning, and salt. Add approximately two-thirds of the suya pepper and mix thoroughly until the seasoning evenly coats the chicken. You can start air frying the wings immediately or allow them to marinate before cooking for even more flavor.

- Preheat the Air Fryer. Make sure your air fryer basket is clean. Set the air fryer to 375°F for 25 minutes and preheat. I have made plenty of chicken recipes without preheating my air fryer, so don’t panic if your particular airfryer doesn’t require it. Follow what works best for your appliance.
- Arrange the Chicken Wings. Arrange the seasoned chicken wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not crowd the basket, and cook in batches as needed.

- Make the Suya Basting Mixture. Combine the reserved suya pepper with the remaining extra virgin olive oil. Stir until you have a spreadable mixture. Feel free to add more oil if needed. Also add a dash of salt or Knorr, if needed. Taste and adjust. This is what you’ll use to brush additional suya flavor onto the wings as they cook. Set aside until needed.
- Air Fry, Flip, and Baste the Suya Wings. Air fry the chicken wings at 375°F for about 25 minutes. During cooking, brush the wings with the reserved yaji mixture every 8–10 minutes. Flip the wings during cooking, and brush them again with the yaji mixture after flipping. Continue air frying and basting until the wings are beautifully browned, crisp outside, and fully cooked. The chicken wings are ready when the thickest part reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) without touching the bone. Repeat the process with the remaining batches.

- Serve and Enjoy! Remove the Nigerian suya chicken wings from the air fryer and serve warm with freshly sliced onions and tomatoes for that classic 9ja suya experience. Enjoy them as an appetizer, snack, or alongside your favorite meal. Dig in and enjoy!
