I Baked St. Patricks’ Day Homemade Irish Soda Bread in Air Fryer

I made this simple and easy air fryer Irish soda bread on St. Patrick’s Day and liked it very much. Uniquely, Irish soda bread is associated with St. Patrick’s Day, and making this bread on that day made a lot of sense.😊

Typically, my kids are always thrilled about St. Patrick’s Day, dressing up in green-colored outfits, doing all the Irish things, and trying to get lucky! This homemade Irish soda bread was my little way of adding to that celebration. I made two small loaves; we ate the first loave as a snack with butter and marmalade, YUM.

The following day, I made French toast for the kids with the leftover soda bread.

What is Special about Homemade Irish Soda Bread?

First, Irish soda bread has a unique texture with a crusty outside and tender on the inside. It should appear dense but not too thick. It is perfect with butter, jam, jelly, marmalade, or any fruit preserve. Second, this quick bread makes a great recipe to include on St. Patrick’s Day menu as it is associated with that celebration. Third, soda bread is unique because it is a quick bread that requires absolutely no expertise and less time. And finally, this soda bread is special because it was made at home – homemade Irish soda bread! You already know nothing is better than homemade!

Why does Irish Soda Bread not need Yeast?

Irish Soda Bread does not need yeast because it requires baking soda as the leavening agent instead of yeast. And the baking soda gives it a unique dense texture.

Can you make soda bread in an air fryer?

Yes, you can make Irish soda bread in an air fryer; it’s actually quicker in the air fryer. Simply place bread soda in the air fryer and cook for 20 minutes at 300 degrees. Usually, the bigger the loaf, the more time it takes to cook; mine were small loaves. Baking it at 300 and for 20 minutes was perfect for these loaves. When I tested this recipe initially, I baked it at a higher temperature, and it appeared too hard, a little burnt and undercooked.

Step four: Spray air fryer basket and place dough in the air fryer; make a cross or score the top of the dough with X. This helps the dough bake faster and evenly. Milk wash the top of the bread by simply brushing with milk (before baking).

Step five: Bake the dough for 20 minutes at 300 degrees and check for doneness with a toothpick insert. I typically do not turn the bread halfway; the score helps it perfectly bake without the need for flipping. After baking, allow cooling before serving and easily break this bread apart by the “farts,” or score.

Serving and Storage:

Serve homemade Irish soda bread with butter, jam, marmalade, or any fruit preserve. Relatively, to store leftover soda bread, first, seal in an air-tight container, and then leave up to 3 – 4 days on the kitchen counter. Beware not to allow this bread to dry out before storing it as it can quickly dry out; typically, I would store it as soon as it completely cools down. On the other hand, you can freeze soda bread for up to 3 months.

Irish” Soda Bread is not Irish?

Listen, y’all, I almost fell off my seat when I learned that Irish soda bread did not particularly originate from Ireland. I was like, “what the heck!” Well, I did a little bit of digging, and found out that soda bread, aka bread soda, has a lot of history, and I am here for it!

While there is traditional Irish soda bread (brown soda bread, or white soda bread), most of the “Irish” soda bread we make and enjoy here in America are Americanized! Lolz. This article was a great read about St. Patrick’s Day Irish soda bread, also this article as well. The different variations we see today with butter, eggs, raisins, and caraway seeds mainly started in America (North America) by European settlers.

Though the basic soda bread recipe consists only of flour, baking soda, buttermilk, and salt, there are many varieties out here on the internet street. And if you choose to make it at home as I did, you can even personalize it with dried fruits and nuts. On the other hand, I want to keep this basic soda bread recipe, well, basic.
